Mulled wine is a warm, spiced wine that is traditionally served during the winter months. It is easy to make at home and can be customized to suit your taste preferences. Here is a basic recipe for making mulled wine:
Ingredients:
- 750 ml bottle of red wine
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup honey or sugar
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 orange, sliced
- 4 whole cloves
- 4 whole allspice berries
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Optional: 1/4 cup brandy or other spirit (such as rum or whiskey)
Instructions:
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the red wine, orange juice, honey or sugar, and cinnamon sticks.
- Add the orange slices, cloves, allspice berries, and nutmeg to the pot.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Do not allow it to boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the wine simmer for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how strong you want the flavors to be.
- If desired, add the brandy or other spirit to the pot.
- Strain the wine to remove the solids, then serve in mugs or heat-resistant glasses.
You can adjust the spices and sweetener to taste, and feel free to add other ingredients such as sliced apples or pears, cranberries, or a vanilla bean to give the wine additional flavor. Mulled wine can be served hot or at room temperature, and is often served at holiday parties or as a comforting drink on a cold winter’s evening. Enjoy!
