To make homemade wine, you will need the following ingredients and equipment:


  • Fresh, ripe grapes or other fruit
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Yeast
  • Optional: Citric acid or tartaric acid, for adjusting the pH of the must; oak chips or oak barrels, for aging the wine; other ingredients, such as spices or herbs, for adding flavor to the wine


  • A large, food-grade plastic or glass container for fermenting the must (a food-grade bucket or carboy will work well)
  • An airlock and stopper, or a piece of clean cloth and a rubber band, to cover the container and allow gases to escape
  • A siphon hose and a sterilized glass carboy or bottle for transferring the wine
  • Optional: A hydrometer, for measuring the specific gravity of the must; a pH meter or test strips, for measuring the pH of the must; an oak barrel or oak chips, for aging the wine
